Roller derby over 50

Melody Kool was born on September of 2010 when I got brave enough to go to my first roller derby training.  I discovered this sport about a year before when I went to watch a friend play.  I grew up roller skating and loved it.  Little did I know that it could be a sport that I could learn.  Mind you I was terrible at everything except swimming and even then was to timid to compete.

I wa alreedy 49 when I became a part of the sport and I have to work very hard to keep up with the 20 to 30 year old players.  I am determined to get as good as I can even if I can’t make a public competing team. I’m still trying and am going to my first bootcamp in
December.

Regardless of how things go I plan to skate right into the next life. I had to find the motivation to get up off the couch and get into shape and this is how I am doing it.  I am in the best shape since my early 30’s.  I have discovered it is never to late to start.  I have had set backs with some injurys and watching some many pass me by but I will not give up!

  1. Hi. I’m just like you. I’m 48, almost 49, and will be going to my very first roller derby fresh meat orientation next month. I skated a lot when I was younger but that’s been a long time ago. I’ve been going to a local rink to practice but darn it if I haven’t pulled a groin tendon. I keep going, though. I can do plow and t stops fairly well, skate very fast, and so-so backwards. But I’m scared as heck to not be able to keep up with the younger skaters. I know how you feel with being older. My first real derby newbie practice is in two weeks. Wish me luck!

  2. I googled Derby over 50 and read this post. I am 48 and joined the local derby league last summer. Like you it is something to get me off the couch! I have learned that everyone learns at a different pace and I will go my own pace. I have no desire to scrimmage but LOVE the workouts! I cannot remember coming home from a gym workout smiling like I do after Derby! Nice to know there are other women over 30 joining and enjoying the sport!
